These are flanked on either side of the tail by smaller engines designed for in-orbit manoeuvres and for deorbit and re-entry into the atmosphere at the end of the mission. At the rear of Discovery is housed the three main engines used for launch into orbit. The doors also feature reflective stickers to mimic the cooling radiators found on the real shuttle orbiter. The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery is made up of 2,354 pieces and is amazingly detailed in true reflection of its full-size counterpart, complete with functional landing gear, and payload bay doors that open one after the other. Ever since, Hubble has shared wondrous images of deep space, leading to breakthroughs in astrophysics and space exploration. Image from The Set Launching today, the incredible new LEGO® NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set brings the wonder of space exploration back home! Ideal for adult builders, the new set is a detailed recreation of the STS-31 mission launched in April 1990 and saw the orbiter Discovery and its five crew members deploy the Hubble Space Telescope into the cosmos. In 2011, the Space Shuttle program was retired. The shuttle also launched many satellites, sections for the ISS and was used as a laboratory for scientific experiments. The shuttle is most famous for bringing the Hubble Space Telescope into space in 1990, which is also featured in this set. The shuttle carried out more than 30 missions. The 10283-1 Space Shuttle is a model of the Space Shuttle Discovery, the third space shuttle NASA has build in 1983. (Opinion might be colored by nostalgia, Classic Review waiting in queue) This year, NASA celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Space Shuttle program. My all-time favorite is of course the 8480-1 Technic Space Shuttle, hands down the best set LEGO has ever released. With 1204 parts, it only half in size of the set we are looking at today. The last set fully focused on the Space Shuttle in NASA form, was the 10213-1 Shuttle Adventure from 2010, later re-released as 10231-1 Shuttle Expedition. Most of these are models that don't really represent the real-life model, but feature a lookalike in CITY sets. The Space Shuttle has not been overlooked too, with 21 appearances in sets, not counting the 70923-1 Bat-Space Shuttle. ![]() Side-note: Looking forward to the Perseverance getting her own set? ![]() Earlier, Nathan has reviewed the 21309-1 NASA Apollo Saturn V, and one of the first reviews I've ever read was for the 21104-1 Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover. In the past year I've already reviewed the 21321-1 International Space Station and 10266-1 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander. Both in imaginary models, proven by the many Space themes, and in real-life models, proven by the many sets that LEGO has released. LEGO and space exploration go very well together.
